“Fighting for Kindness”

“Animals are the real victims on this earth. They didn’t declare war, they don’t have weapons, and they don’t want to destroy humans, or impose religion. Their only crime is to live.”

Let me tell you the story of a small sweet white dog named Suzy.  Once upon a time, Suzy had a beautiful home with her wonderful family.  She was well taken care of and spoiled by her humans. One fateful day, Suzy’s life changed forever by a deadly bomb.  She was found by strangers under all the death and destruction. As the strangers pulled her out from an eight-story apartment building, she saw that her wonderful home had been turned into rubble. Her entire human family had perished.  Whimpering, Suzy pawed through the rubble hoping to find one of her humans.   But sadly, this little sweet white dog, who had never slept outside a day in her life, was now all alone.  She was now a stray forced to fight for her survival.

Suzy’s story is the story of so many pets that are suffering due to war.  It is devastating to imagine these sweet animals, traumatized by the relentless bombing, are now left to endure fear and hunger with no one to protect them.

In Gaza, a few volunteers bring large bags of dog and cat food. With a simple whistle, they invite the stray dogs to come and eat what little they can provide. Unfortunately, there are too many animals and not enough food for all of them. Suzy is now very dirty and alarmingly thin. Even so, with her hopeful eyes and wagging tail, she is always the first one to greet the two volunteers. For her, that whistle has become the sound of survival.  Sadly, the visits have become less frequent as conditions in the area worsen. Suzy, the little white dog who once knew a loving home full of love and treats, is now running out of time to live.

Thus, I ask you, as my readers, as you debate politics, economics and gas prices, to remember the animals that are suffering due to war. Their only crime was to live.
